Routine by Arthur Guiterman

No matter what we are and who,
Some duties everyone must do:

A Poet puts aside his wreath
To wash his face and brush his teeth,

And even Earls
Must comb their curls,

And even Kings
Have underthings.

Sometimes I feel the burden of my own "greatness". Since childhood I have believe that I am destined for "great things". As a Latter-day Saint woman I have the perspective that all that is within my view and grasp today is only a hint of what is to come. I truly believe that I can be a goddess. With the view of eternity looming before me, and promises of becoming a goddess, it can be easy for me to get discouraged in the mundane parts of life. I yearn to wear my crown now. Such a perspective can also cause me to look with disdain upon my daily weaknesses and mistakes. Sometimes I wonder how one who has such potential could be capable of such monumental screw-ups! Thank goodness that a loving Father in Heaven, in His infinite mercy and goodness, gave us new days. Sunrises and hope. A chance to reinvent. An opportunity to change. And so, the poem of the day for me is "Routine". It is in the routine of the little things that will help me to become great. This is an eternal truth.

Here is a little something I read earlier today:

The mistake most people make is thinking that WILL POWER is what's needed to change their lives. No, the TRUE change comes in all of the little decisions we make.

The best analogy that comes to mind comes from Jeff Olson's The Slight Edge:
Imagine if somebody gave you two options: The first is 3 million dollars, no strings attached. The second is a penny that will double in value everyday for 31 days. Chances are, unless you actually stop and think about it long enough, you would choose the 3 million. But for those who actually understand what I'm getting at would realize that after: One week-the penny would be worth $0.64, Two weeks-$81.92, A few days into week three- $655.36, At the end of the 31 days- $10,737,418.24
The point is, make your change in the little decisions. You won't see the results immediately, but the results ARE gradually building. You'll get your payoff eventually. The change may not be quick, but at least it happens.

"Sow an action, build a habit. Sow a habit, build a character. Sow a character, build a destiny."

What are the small decisions you make on a daily basis that are keeping you from reaching a healthier life? Try logging your decisions for these changes over the course of a week and see if you can find your weaknesses.
